Gurudongmar Lake

Gurudongmar Lake, located in North Sikkim at a distance of 175 km from Gangtok, is situated at an altitude of 16890 feet, making it one of the highest lakes in the world. It is beautifully located on the northern side of Khangchagyeo Range and is surrounded by striking snow clad mountains. Except for one spot, the entire lake freezes in the winter. The lake is just a few kilometers away from the China-Tibetan border. It is believed that the water of Gurudongmar Lake possesses the miraculous power of granting children to the parents devoid of child.

This lake is allowed to be visited only by Indian tourists. The name Gurudongmar is derived from the Sikh Guru Padmasambhava who is thought to have visited Tibet through this area. There is also a small temple dedicated to Guru Padmasambhava.
